This is a brief page to describe replacing your OEM Lite-On 2001 IDE cable with a SHIELDED aftermarket cable.

There really is no point to doing this exercise unless you purchase a SHIELDED cable.

BTW...this whole idea came from Jay Blair, as posted on the http://www.hometheaterforum.com web site.  Oh yeah...and if you blow up your 2001 by doing this...it's not Jay or myself's fault.  It's all you, baby.

On we go....

First...unplug your damn player from everything.  Power.  Video and Audio cables.  Everything.  The back should look JUST LIKE THE ABOVE PHOTO!!!!

Unscrew these 3 screws, (the ones shown in the picture above), as well as two screws each on the left and right sides of the player.

The back will lift off.  Remove gently.  No force is needed.  Force=Bad.

This is an 'after' picture.  Didn't really feel that a 'before' picture was needed...because you're looking at it already.

Remove the stock cable between the player, (large black box on the right), and the processor board, (green thing with shiny stuff on it, on the left).
Make sure you don't bend anything on the green, shiny board while you remove the cable. Bending=Bad.

Replace with your new and shiny cable.

You MAY need to add a hole to the Processor Board end of it. (See arrow).
Best way of doing that is heating a un-bent paper-clip up in a flame and melting the hole.
(Or you can be like me and use large, high-torque, power tools.  See other parts of this web site regarding my removal of three of my own fingers with my table-saw. [They're back on...it's OK. I can still count to nine.  Oh wait....] )

This is a closer-up (it's not really a CLOSE-up...just closer-up) of the finished install on my unit.  Obviously I didn't buy one of the groovy 8 inch cables that would have neatly fit.  I've done some routing of the extra cable length.  My particular cable came with a grounding wire...which you can see I've mounted to the chassis at the top of the picture.  If your cable has a grounding wire, make sure you mount it DIRECTLY TO THE CHASSIS, and not, to say, any of the shiny green boards.
Grounding Wire to Shiny Green Board=Bad.

In addition to the replaced cable, I also built a couple of shields out of aluminum foil.  I used roughly a 2.5 foot section of aluminum foil (2.5 ft x whatever the width of an aluminum foil roll is).  I folded it up to roughly the dimensions of that you see in this picture. (This makes a fairly thick 'sheet' of foil).  I then wrapped the foil with paper to prevent frying anything electrical....trimmed the whole thing to size with a razor, taped all the ends up and taped the two 'shields' into the 2001.  It's not pretty, but it's there.  I won't claim any improvements other than piece of mind.  I haven't slept this good in at least 2 or 3 days.

Oh yeah....the whole purpose of the shields are to SHIELD (get it?) the rest of the player's guts from the nasty power-supply circuitry. Well...it makes sense to me...and that's what matters.

Good luck!
